The versatility of the cartridge valve range provides our engineers with the ability to mix and match different types of valves and sizes into one forged block, enabling the grouping of pressure measurement, over pressure protection, pressure regulation, and on/off control ? all within one unit.

Calculations of all the pressure drops due to the flow paths through the forged block and each valve filter are provided ? ensuring that the size of the drillings through the block and the selection of each element within that supply are within the design limits specified by the end user.

Demonstration of regulation accuracy and minimum pressure drop through the filter was a mandatory requirement, ensuring that at the point of use, the exact pressure at the required flow is delivered. Both empirical and mathematical results have been provided to ensure that this mandatory requirement has been fully achieved.

A ¾″ 800-B3 Valve Housing with a design pressure rating of 280 Bar (4000 psi), was successfully pressure tested?to 10,875 psi; Refer to attached report.

Benefits of using Light Weight Titanium Housings

  • Overall weight saving for the boat in access of 35% if all bodies are made from titanium. 20% if only DN25 and DN32 are used
  • Easier handing of the bodies during the installation phase. One person can handle all sizes (titanium).
  • Pipe hangers can be reduced by size, weight, and quantity due to the reduced weight of the housings.
  • Pipe reaction stresses are reduced (due to titanium housings), leading to stiffer joints and less likely to flex and leak. (More prevalent on screwed joints).
  • Use of correct grade of titanium reduces corrosion cracking at the stud and body joints lowering the change out rate of the fixings.
  • The fit form and function of the titanium body being of the same design affords all the benefits associated with the cartridge methodology, those being ease of maintenance, lower through life costs, reduced pressure drop size for size, and low noise characteristic.

Pressure Test to Establish Bolting Characteristics

  • Equipment
    • Test Jig (housings)
    • The high pressure water test bench
    • Calibrated pressure gauge
    • Test medium: De-ionised water
  • Documentation
    • Check that the serial number on the valve to be tested is the same as the serial number detailed on the Factory Acceptance Test Report.
    • Check that the number of this procedure matches the number detailed on the Factory Acceptance Test Report.
    • Check that the test pressure stated on the Factory Acceptance Test Report is the same as that detailed on the drawing.
    • Any discrepancies are to be reported to the supervisor.
  • Procedure
    • Ensure safe place of work and equipment is clean.
    • Measure the key dimensions of housing neck diameter, housing pipe run diameter, protrusion height of each stud and end to end of the housing.
    • Make sure the housing is secure, close vent valve open distribution valve. Slowly operate pump until water spills out, when all air has been expelled close the jig vent.
    • Wipe all joints and external surfaces of the equipment under test so as to remove any residual water.
    • Slowly operate the pump raising the test pressure. As the pressure rises check that there is no significant decay of pressure between strokes of the pump and check the equipment under test for leaks and record a fail if the leak cannot be rectified.
    • Slowly increase pressure until the test pressure of 750 bar (10,875 psi) is attained and maintain the housing for a minimum period of 5 minutes.
    • Visually check the equipment under test for cracks, distortion and leaks. If any are found a fail is to be recorded and the test is to be stopped. Relieve all pressure.
    • Increase the pressure to 750 bar (10,875 psi) and hold the pressure for 15 seconds and Repeat until the housing has undergone 10 pressurisations.
    • On the final pressurisation visually check the equipment under test for cracks, distortion and leaks. Record any findings.
    • Measure the key dimensions and compare against the dimensions reordered in step 3.2
    • Relieve all pressure and remove the equipment under test for cleaning.
  • System Test Diagram
  • Results
    • The procedure above was carried out on a test housing of 10 mm nominal bore manufactured from titanium with ferrule type screwed end connections.
    • An 800 series blanking cover was fitted in place of a cartridge which allowed pressure onto the whole pressure boundary and correctly transmitted pressure forces to the threads.
    • No cracks, distortion or leaks were detected at steps 3.7 or 3.9.
    • The key dimensions were measured and no permanent change to any dimension was found.
  • Conclusion
    • A successful test was recorded

System for the control of various gases for arocket launch pad

This project dictated a compact design providing high flow dynamics and close and accurate control of the three main gases used for launching of a multi-stage rocket. The individual gases lines for nitrogen, helium and air, (which are needed for blanketing, propulsion, and command functions respectively) are each supplied from a 400 Bar (6000 PSI) source through a series of distribution units to the main regulation and control stations.

The control of each supply line ? 30 in total ? is afforded by stop valves, electro-pneumatic stop valves, regulators, and check valves. To meet with the overall space envelope of the installation, the cartridge valve system was chosen over conventional valves.

Gas Control System for Rocket Launch Pad

This project required a compact design with high flow characteristics and close control. Individual gas lines each being supplied from a 400 bar (6000 psi) source were routed through the individual blocks. The control of each supply line is afforded by stop valves check valves, electro-pneumatic stop valves, and regulators. The versatility of the cartridge valve system allows our designers to mix and match different types of valves into one forged block, enabling the grouping of over pressure protection, pressure regulation and on/off control in one block. The three blocks are connected by suitable piping.

Inlet Block

This block reduced the pressure from the main incoming supply to various set points depending on the application. Accuracy of the set point was better than ? 2%. Two stage reduction was provided for where the pressure reduction was large. Over pressure protection was ensured by fitting relief valves.

  • 1 x 804 Filter ( 20 micron absolute)
  • 2 x 316 Gauge valves
  • 2 x 806 Actuated stop valves
  • 2 x 806 Actuated stop valves (reduced orifice)

Control Block

This block reduced the pressure from the main incoming supply to various set points depending on the application. Accuracy of the set point was better than ? 2%. Two stage reduction was provided for where the pressure reduction was large. Over pressure protection was ensured by fitting relief valves.

Outlet Block

This block controlled the output to the main launch pad gantry, utilizing actuated stop valves. Venting of the system back to either a recovery system in the case of Helium or to atmosphere was again provided for by actuated stop valves. The total system is controlled from a remote point.
